Can a cracked window be repaired, or must the glass be replaced?

A cracked pane is replaced. Single pane glass can be re-glazed the same day. A crack in a sealed unit can’t be sealed or filled: the unit has lost its seal at the crack, so the whole sealed unit is replaced in the frame. Resin kits sold for windshields hide a house-window crack but don’t restore strength or the seal.

Thermal stress: sun heats the centre of a cold pane faster than the shaded edge, and the edge gives.

Is broken window glass covered by home insurance?

Whether a broken window is covered depends on your policy. Sudden damage such as hail, wind, a break-in or an accident is what a home policy is written for; wear, age and seal failure are what it usually excludes. Read your policy or ask your broker before you decide to claim.
